The Advent Calendar was originally designed for children. It was invented at the end of the 19th century by Gerhard Lang, a German publisher inspired by his mother. According to legend, she would bake twenty-four biscuits, each wrapped in coloured paper, and give one to young Gerhard each day from the first of December until the anticipated date of the 25th.
Today, many Advent calendars are made to be filled with sweets or small gifts for children to discover day by day.
