Russian icon, Pentecost 14x10 cm.
This icon portrays the famous scene of the group of the Apostles sitting in a semicircle.
This shape symbolizes the unity and the communion among the Apostles and with Christ.
The overall structure of the image recalls that of a temple, the place of the encounter between World and Heaven. In this sense the icon of the Pentecost expresses the mystery of the Holy Church.
There are three arches in the image: the top one is the one of the building where the event takes place; the second one is the one shaped by the seats of the Apostles, where an empty seat in the middle suggest that Jesus is invisibly present; a third arch, at the bottom, contains the figure of king Cosmos, personification of the universe. The universe was created by God and dignified; emerging from the dark space behind him, he holds twelve scrolls, symbol of the Gospel announced by the Apostles.
This is a very detailed icon, made in Russia, handmade and hand painted by Russian artists, according to the traditional techniques and norms of Russian iconography.
This is a copy of a XVIII century icon belonging to an Italian collection.
