Tradition has it that the icon of the face of Christ Acheiropoieta was donated to King Abgar of Edessa directly by Jesus who bathed his face and dried it with a Mandylion linen cloth on which his features were miraculously impressed. It is therefore the first Acheropita, an image not painted by human hand. From Edessa the icon was brought to Constantinople on 15 August 944 where it is kept until the arrival of the crusaders who sacked the Byzantine capital in 1204. The icon therefore arrives in Rome where it is venerated in the Vatican with the title of Veronica, Vera Icon. In the Christian East, the icon is celebrated on two recurring dates: August 16, the icon of the Savior not painted by human hands is celebrated and the first Sunday of Lent which celebrates the Triumph of Orthodoxy. Both celebrations see the depictions of the Face of Christ's Acheropite on display in all Orthodox churches.
