This icon represents Saint Michael the Archangel, leader of the forces of God, riding a winged horse and fighting against Satan. The Saint is sounding the charge with a trumpet, while holding a Gospel in his left hand and a spear in the right stabbing Lucifer. On his left wrist we can notice a chain with a thurible.
After the spread of the Cristianity, the worship of this Saint had a huge success in the East and in the orhodox liturgical calendar he is commemorated on the 6th of September and the 8th of October. He is often invoked as protection during wars, to heal the sick, protect the sailors and the traders and help departed souls in the afterlife.
