Ancient Russian icon of Christ Acheiropoieta, 37.4x30.3 cm. Icon from central Russia of the 18th century, painted on wood with embossed frame, representing the face of Christ Acheiropoieta, "not created by human hands".
According to tradition, this image traditionnaly is related to King Abgar of Edessa who wrote to Jesus, asking him his portrait. Jesus Christ wet his face and dried it with a linen where his image was miraculously printed. This linen, the Mandylion, is supported by two angels.
