Ancient Russian icon of Saint John the Evangelist with basma, 17th century, 12.3x11 inches. Rare icon of the 17th century with silver basma, representing a bust-size portrait of Saint John the Evangelist in his old age with an open book, showing the Gospel he wrote.

Saint John brings his fingers to his mouth inviting to silence, an attitude that is probably caused by a passage from his Gospel.
