The saint warrior was martyrised under the emperor Dacianus, to whom he affirmed to be Christian and ended decapitated.
The legend of the young princess freed from the dragon became one of the most widespread iconographic theme.
In the centre of this icon we find Saint George stabbing the dragon, while the freed princess come towards him from the town walls, where the sovereigns witness the scene. On the top left of the painting, Jesus looks down from a sphere in the sky, symbol of the divine grace fighting evil.
Icon painted with egg tempera on wood and levkas in the mid-19th century in Moscow, delivered in an elegant case with signed expertise.
