Ancient Russian icon of the Deesis, expanded, 19th century, 14x12 inches. The Deësis or Deisis is a Byzantin iconographic theme, which means "prayer" or "supplication". In the representation the figure of blessing Jesus is placed between the Virgin Mary, on his right, and Saint John the Baptist, but sometimes the latest is replaced by Saint Nicholas or by other saints.
The word Deësis was also used to describe images of the Virgin Mary praying or of a donor presenting a supplication, but originally it was referred to images expressing the privileged role of the Virgin and the Baptist as first eyewitnesses of the Christ.
After the 9th century, the composition of this kind of icons starts to incorporate patterns of images associated with the Imperial court, so Jesus is depicted as an emperor, in majesty. With this new emphasis on the intercession, the Deësis became an important element in the representations of the Last Judgement, where the Virgin Mary and Saint John intercede for the humankind.
This icon was painted by hand in Moscow in the 19th century.
