Ancient Russian icon, Orthodox Crucifix with polychrome enamels, 15.6x7.7 inches. The icon represents the Orthodox cross with two transverses instead of one. The sloping part indicates that the Cross is the balance of Justice. On this transverse is depicted the Old Jerusalem with the torn temple curtain, while on the opposite end stands the New Jerusalem.
The upper transverse, larger then usual, represents Christ the Saviour, with a dove and two Cherubims, surrounded by a halo with the lettres meaning "the One who is".
Underneath the Angels four letters are written, indicating Jesus Cristus Rex Judicorum and, on the right and on the left, the letters "King of the Glory".
The body of Christ is anchored to the cross with four nails, not three as in the Occidental crucifix, and his head is turned to the right. By his side are represented a spear on the right and a spear with a sponge on the left. On the end of the spears we find the inscription "Victorious Christ".
Where the cross gets into the ground, the inscription "The place of the Crucifix becomes Paradise" is engraved.
Jesus' death is never represented in agony, but it always appears illuminated by a royal nobility.
The icon has the following characteristics:
Materials: bronze
Period: second half of the 1800
Measures: 15.6x7.7 inches
Origin: Moscow, Russia.
