Ancient Russian icon, Sixteen Great Feasts and Passion Cycle, 19th century, 12x14 in. This icon represents the Sixteen Great Feasts with, in the centre, the Passion Cycle and the Holy Easter.
The Passion cycle includes: the Last Supper, the Washing of the feet, Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, the kiss of Judas, Jesus' trial by Caiaphas, Jesus' trial by Pilate, the Crowning with thorns, the Flagellation, the Way of the Cross, the Crucifixion, the Descent from the cross.
The Great Feasts depicted on the outer cycle are: the Trinity of the Old Testament, the Nativity of the Virgin, the Trinity of the New Testament, Mary's presentation in the Temple, the Annonciation, the Nativity of Jesus, Jesus' presentation in the Temple, the Baptism, the Transfiguration, the Entry into Jerusalem, the Resurrection of Lazarus, the Ascension, the Beheading of St John the Baptist, the Mother of God Joy of all who sorrow, the Dormition of the Holy Virgin, the Exaltation of the Cross.
The Great Feasts depicted in the inner cycle are: Adam kneeling by Jesus, holding his hand and seeming to pull him up. The other figure represents Eve. In some icons, Adam and Eve are depicted on the same side, but in most of them they are represented in a symmetrical way: Christ in the centre, Adam and Eve one on each side.
The icon was painted with egg tempera on linden wood in Central Russia in the 19th century.
