Antique icon, Inexhaustible Chalice, Russia, 19th century. Antique icon from Yaroslav (Russia), painted at the end of the 19th century.
This icon represents the Mother of God with raised hands, praying, and the dove of the Holy Spirit coming from the sky as a Sign of God, like in Isaiah's prophecy. The womb of the Virgin becomes a temple and a monstrance, containing the Infant Jesus, blessing from a golden chalice on the altar. The latter is a symbol of Jesus' Passion and foreshadows Mary as Virgin of the Pasch. The Infant is surrounded by a halo of golden light and his face, still young, reveals nevertheless his wisdom.
