Antique icon, The Nativity of the Theotokos, Russia, beginning of 19th century. Antique icon from Moscow (Russia) painted in the beginning of the 19th century with egg tempera on levkas wood.
The icon tells different episodes connected with the Nativity of the Ever Virgin Mary, framed in different rooms of the same temple, overlaid by a divine nimbus.
Bottom right Joachim and Ann are portrayed kissing, symbol of the Immaculate Conception. In the centre, virgins are offering gifts to Saint Ann and, directly underneath, the scene of the bath, typical representation of a baby's birth. On the left, Mary is presented at the Temple.
