Antique Russian enamel polyptych for travel XIX century, 40x17 cm.
In Russia starting from 440 A.D. the use of metallic, wooden, porcelain and other materials such as pressed paper spread. These small, light weight images are relatively inexpensive and long lasting. Among the most requested subjects we find The Crucifix, The Christ Acheropita, The Virgin Mary, various saints, The Holy Trinity and the Deesis. Icons that in a very short time become neck and travel icons, since they allowed the believer to carry them with them without ever separating from the image as it allowed them to revere and ask for its protection. Until 1600 the most used metals were bronze and copper, from 1700 onward also brass and silver we used and it was customary to cover the bottom of the image with colored glazes. Among the forms we generally find The Crucifix with or without side icons, the single tablet of various sizes, the diptych, the triptych and the polyptych. Very hard and highly matured materials of at least 100 years were used such as woods, to avoid possible damage due to residual humidity.
