Antique Russian icon depicting the Descent into Hell of Jesus Christ.
Created in the 19th century, this icon follows the tradition of the Old Believers of Vetka, a prominent centre for icon production. The scene portrays a key episode in Orthodox Christian theology: the descent of Christ into Hell, where he frees the souls of the righteous and defeats death.
Christ, surrounded by a radiant garment, is shown at the centre, lifting Adam from darkness with strength. Eve, often positioned on the opposite side, has her hands covered in a sign of adoration. Christ's gesture expresses the redemptive action bringing salvation to all humanity.

The composition, with its depth and dynamic figures, emphasises the significance of Christ's victory over death.
