According to a legend of Thessaloniki, Saint Demetrius was a deacon and was martyrised in Sirmio in the public baths.
Two churches were built in his name in the 5th century: one in Sirmio and the other in Thessaloniki. There were brought the relics of Saint Demetrius around 1418.
