Bronze crucifix, homily in Cyrillic, 19th century 35x20 cm. Bronze crucifix from the 19th century, Russia, characterised by a white and black enamelled background.
Crucifix represented with the typical Byzantine shape, with a third slanted crossbeam, symbolising the cross as a balance of justice. In the centre, we find the embossed figure of the Christ with four nails, typical of the Byzantine iconography, and two canes with a lance and a sponge at the end, symbols of the Passion. Underneath, Adam's skull, symbol of the whole humanity, redeemed from original sin thanks to his sacrifice.
The upper part, richly decorated, represents the Byzantine cosmos with Christ the Saviour on the top, the Holy Spirit dove and two angels waiting to receive Jesus' body and soul.
Another peculiarity of this crucifix is the back where an homily in Cyrillic is written and decorated by stylised stars and abstract patterns, plus a second Byzantine cross.
