Icon of the Kazan Mother of God, traditionally as small as the original. This is a variant of the "Odighitria" type which has the peculiarity of the representation of the Child in an upright position. The Russian icon is painted up to the chest and is characterised by a "cut" image perspective, which became popular in the 16th century. According to the iconography of this work, the first image of the "Mother of God of Kazan" was found in the city of Kazan on 8 July 1579 where the icon was hidden by clandestine Christians before the Tartars conquered the city . The liberation of Moscow is linked to the intercession of the Kazan Mother of God since in 1612 Kusma Minin and Prince Dmitri Pogiarski brought with them the copy of the miraculous icon during the war against the Poles. Following this event, the icon was considered the protector of the Romanov dynasty and became one of the most important Russian relics. Origin: Central Russia
