Orthodox crucifix, enamelled bronze, begenning of the 19th, 13.6x6.7 inches. Typical Orthodox crucifix made with casted bronze, enamelled and enriched with blue paint, made in Moscow (Russia) in the beginning of the 19th century.
This crucifix is represented with the typical Byzantine shape, with a third slanted crossbeam, symbolising the cross as a balance of justice. This crossbeam is decorated with a representation of the Old Jerusalem fallen with the curtain of the temple torn, while on the other side stands the New Jerusalem on the bottom inclined is depicted.
The upper part of the cross, richly decorated and larger the the classic Roman sign with the INRI inscription, represents the Byzantine cosmos with Christ the Saviour on the top with the letters indicating "the One who is", the Holy Spirit dove and two angels with 6 wings each, with the inscription "Angels of the Lord", waiting to receive Jesus' body and soul.
Left and right, the four letters indicate Jesus Cristus Rex Judicorum, King of Glory.
Just under the inscription, "In the name of Your sacrifice we await the resurrection of Your glory", which, in some cases, can be replaced by "We bow at Your Cross and glorify Your Resurrection".
As a reminder of Jesus' Passion, there are lances and sponges and, contrary to what is depicted in the Western Christianity, Jesus is crucified with four neils, not three.
Under the body of Christ, stays Adam's skull, symbol of the whole humanity, redeemed from original sin thanks to his sacrifice.
