Patriarch's cross, blue enamel, Russia, 19th century 40x20 cm. Cross of the Patriarch made of bronze, from the beginning of the 19th century, characterised by polychrome enamel, dark and light blue for the background and light yellow for the halos.
The cross evolves around the central figure of Jesus, crucified, represented according to the Byzantine tradition. Around him, we found several scenes from the Old and the New Testament, plus a representation of Saint Nicholas and few Marian images. The two pictures above have and elegant cuspidal shape, typically Byzantine, while the end of the icon is closed by an aureole with six-wings angels.
The crucified Jesus has Jerusalem on his feet, while under the cross we see Adam's skull, symbole of the whole humanity, redeemed from original sin thanks to his sacrifice. On the side, a deesis of saints in supplication of Christ. Above him, the Saviour with the globe in one hand and the Holy Spirit dove underneath, accompanied by two angels waiting for Jesus' body and soul. Over the cross, in a circle, Our Lady of the Sign is represented with hands up and the Child in her lap. Still higher, we see the Virgin again, whit the Child, surrounded by the images of the Evangelists.
