Quadripartite ancient Russian icon with Crucifixion XIX century, 35.5x31x2 cm.
Quadripartite icon with four events depicted by the following titles: "Sweetening of Evil Hearts", "Comfort my pain", "Hope of sinners" and "She who seeks the lost".
In the Softening of Evil Hearts we find an interpretation of the Prophet Simeon who forms several symbolic icons of the Virgin which resort to prayer to invoke the sweetening of the heart and facilitate physical and mental suffering. The icon is represented with six swords in its heart and a central one downwards, not to be confused with the Marian typology "The Mother of God of the seven swords". The number seven in writing usually completeness or redundancy, but in this case it refers to the completeness and immensity of pain, of the Mother of God during her earthly life. The celebration of this image is the week of all the holy days (first Sunday after the Trinity).
In "Consolate my pain" we find expressed the intimate suffering of Mary who, in Golgotha, sees her only child unjustly dying and relives the deep pain in the long years of solitude and abandonment to follow until assumed in heaven she receives in the Dormition consolation to his punishment. In fact, in the icon she is represented as the one who knows how to take on the sufferings of Humanity, as depicted with her right hand on the sad and pensive temple with Christ floating freely in the mantle without the usual support of the arm in an incorporeal dimension.
We find on the scroll the inscription "Judge according to justice, work with mercy and magnanimity". The name of the icon derives from the fifth stanza of the Akathistos hymn "Comfort the pain of my soul".
In "The Hope of Sinners" the most important features are the figure of the Mother of God in half-length, the position of the Child who stands on the Mother's knees and embraces her with his right hand, the Child's cheek touching that of the Mother, and the hands of the Madonna with the fingers crossed. The name of the icon is linked to the story of the "Penance of Theophilus" who, praying before the image of the Mother of God, called it "The Hope of sinners".
