Virgin of Vladimir with theca, ancient Russian icon, 19th century, 9.6x8.3 inches. Icon painted in the second half of the 19th century following the style of the Moscow iconographic school.
The first mention of the original Virgin of Vladimir was found in the chronicles of the year 1155, where it is mentioned that the icon was brought to Kuev in the monastery of Vyshhorod. In the same year, the prince Andrey of Bogolyubovo brought it to his principality, Vladimir-Suzdal, where he decorated the icon with a golden frame and then took it to Moscow.
This depiction of the Theotokos belongs to the Eleusa iconographic type, the Virgin of Tenderness, where the left cheek of the Infant Jesus touches the right cheek of the Mother of God, symbolising a relationship full of love and tenderness.
The icon is painted with egg tempera on a linden wood board, is contained in a protective theca and enriched by an embossed riza with gold and silver bath.
