The painting represents a full frontal hieratic portrait of Jesus. Blessing the audience with his right hand according to the Orthodox ritual, he holds an open Gospel with his left hand.
On his halo are written the Greek letters indicating "The One who is", while the characteristic features of Jesus are typical of the Christ Pantocrator: helmet haircut, parted in the centre, broad forehead, big thoughtful eyes, long nose and thight lips.
