Antique icon of St Nicholas of Myra, 19th century, restored, Russia, 12x10 in. Icon depicting Saint Nicholas in his episcopal robes, blessing the audience, painted by hand in Russia with egg tempera in the 19th century and restored in the 21th. This bust-size portrait represents the bishop of Myra with the omophrion on his shoulders and a Gospel in his hands.
The intense expession of the Saint symbolises his tenacious defense against heresies, particularly during the Council of Nicaea in 325, where he confronted the heretic bishop Arius and was then defrocked and imprisoned. But an apparition of the Holy Virgin and Jesus Christ gave him back his freedom and his episcopal dignity, confirming him in the true faith.
In this icon, accompanied by Greek inscriptions, are also depicted Jesus and the Virgin Mary by Saint Nicholas' side.
