Antique icon of the Mother of God of Smolensk, 19th century, restored, central Russia, 11x9 in. Antique icon from central Russia, representing the Theotokos of Smolensk, painted by hand on a wood board and levkas in the 19th century and restored in the 21th.
The image depicts an image of the Theotokos of the Hodegetria type, where the Mother of God points at her Son, Savior of humanity, with her right hand. The Infant blesses his Mother with the right hand according to the Byzantin Orthodox ritual and holds the scroll of the Holy Scriptures in the left.
Brought from Jerusalem to Constantinople in 1046 as a blessing by Constantin to his daughter Anne on the day of her wedding, the icon was transferred to Smolensk by Anne's son, Vladimir.
The first miracle of the painting dates to 1237, when the people of Smolensk won Batu Khan after praying in front of the holy image.
Then in 1812, the Russian army brought the icon into the battlefield during Napoleon's invasion as a protection.
The Greek inscriptions represent the name of Mary, Mother of God, and Jesus Christ.
Faithful copy of the original, delivered with guarantee certificate and a report signed by a certified expert in a blue velvet case.
