Eye of Providence, restored Russian icon, antique wood of Czarist era, 40x30 cm. Russian icon painted by hand and restored on an antique wood plank of the Czarist era, called the Eye of Providence or All-Seeing Eye of God, characterised by the recurrent use of the circle, manifestation of unity and symbol of perfection.
There are four concentric circles, symbolising the cosmic breath. The first contains the icon of the All-Seeing Eye of God as the ideologic and semantic centre of the composition.
The Saviour is represented surrounded by cherubs, angelic creatures, on a starry background, incarnation of purity and spirituality.
In the second circle, the tangible world is represented as a sky where the most perfect creature is the Virgin. In the third circle, the face and two eyes, ancient symbol of the Trinity (the face is the Son, the two eyes are the Father and the Holy Spirit) from which radiates the light on the creation. In the fourth circle, we finally found Jesus Christ, Man and God, inside a circle as in the sun, who has come to redeem Adam's debt. From him four rays depart, marking the cardinal points where the Good News is preached. The Lord is represented here as the beginning of everything, the source of physical and spiritual life, while Christ represents the light of the truth and the Mother of God is the intermediary and the mediator of all human race.
The wood plank of the Czarist Russia (late 18th-beginning of 19th century) is hand painted on gold leaf with egg tempera.
