Our Lady of Tikhvin, restored Russian icon, wood of 19th century, 40x32 cm. Russian icon on wood of the 19th century repainted by hand on gold leaf in the 20th century by Russian masters following the ancient strict rules of Russian iconography.
The Theotokos of Tikhvin is one of the most famous Orthodox icons. According to tradition, the original was painted by Saint Luke the Evangelist and was brought to Jerusalem and then to Constantinople in the 5th century.
The characteristics of this icon type are the inclination of the Virgin's head and the posture of Jesus Child, represented on the side, looking at the right shoulder of his Mother. He crosses his right leg under the other. The left leg is covered by the Himatio and stretched forward, showing the sole of the foot. The right hand is risen in a blessing gesture.
On the side of the Mother of God, we find Saints Andrew and Barbara.
On the exterior frame, on the bottom, we can see King David and, clockwise, Saints James, Thomas, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Simeon, Philip and Zechariah.
Delivered with certificate of authenticity.
