Our Lady of Vladimir is one of the most revered Orthodox icons. The original icon was painted in Constantinople in the twelfth century and sent to Byzantium, tradition says that the horses carrying the icon stopped and refused to go any further. Our Lady of Vladimir, also known as Our Lady of Compassion, was venerated as the protector of Russia.
