The Mother of God of the Three Hands, also called Tricherousa, comes from the story of Saint John Damascene (VII century). According to the legend, emperor Leo III punished him for his tenacious defense of holy images and ordered to chop off his right hand. After John has prayed in front of the icon of Theotokos, the miracle took place and, in honour of that healing, he added a second silver right hand on the icon.
Icon made of wood levkas and painted with egg tempera.
