The Odigitria always was considered the main one among the icons of the Madonna in Byzantium: it was believed that it had been painted by Saint Luke. The original version was brought from Antioch to Constantinople in the fifth century: since then it was venerated and there were numerous versions, such as the one of Smolensk. It is said that the first icon of this type was brought to Russia by a Byzantine princess who married a Russian prince, St. Vladimir, in the 12th century. The oldest version known dates back to 1330.
