Gruzija is the ancient name of the former Sovietic republic of Georgia, where the Christianity arrived really soon. The Georgian church has an patriarchate independent from Moscow, but this icon, Our Lady of Gruzinskaja, is well known in Russia too. The iconography reminds the Hodegetria type, but with a peculiar choice of colours.
In 1625, a Russian merchant obtained this icon of the Mother of God in Persia, where it has been stolen by Persians during their conquest of Gruzija. He was advised to donate the precious icon to the Monastery of Krasnogorsk, where it became an instrument of miracles.
This icon of Our Lady Gruzinskaja is hand painted in Romania following traditional iconographic technics.
