The icon of the Mother of God of the Don was written by Theophanes. The original painting is known for having led the Russians to victory against the Tartars in 1380 and for putting them on the run from Moscow in 1591. The name of the icon comes from the Don district, region of origin of the prince Dimitri of Moscow, who had received the painting as a gift in 1380 after the battle.
Painted by hand on a wood board following the Byzantin iconographic tradition, the icon is delivered in a blue velvet case with satin lining, accompanied by a guarantee certificate and a document with the history of the icon.
