According to the legend, its first apparition dates from 1383, near Novgorod. The icon appeared later by the river Tikhvinka.
During the German occupation, in 1941, the icon was taken from the monastery of Tikhvin and brought to Germany, then to Chicago, in the United States, where it was kept in Peter and Paul Cathedral. In 2004, the painting was returned to Russia and went back to the monastry of Tikhvin.
This icon belongs to the Hodegetria iconographic type, where the Mother points at her Son with the right hand, showing humanity the real Way to salvation, while Jesus blesses the Virgin Mary.
The Greek inscriptions indicates the names of the characters, Mother of God and Jesus Christ.
Icon delivered in an elegant blue velvet case with satin lining.
