The day of Jesus' presentation at the temple, 40 days afters his birth, Simeon took the Infant in his arms and recognised him as the Messiah, pronouncing the famous words of grace that today are contained in what we call the Canticle of Simeon ("Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation...") and prophesied to Mary: "A sword will pierce your own soul so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed".
