According to experts, the theme of the Mother of God of Three Hands comes from the first period of the Byzantine empire and belongs to the models willingly replicated in contemporary iconographic art. This theme is connected to a legend about one of the most famous Christian theologians, Saint John Damascene, sentenced to lose his left hand by the cruel Byzantine emperor Leo III. After the execution of the sentence, the Saint prayed in front of an icon of the Virgin Hodegetria, which started to glow with a miraculous light, and suddenly a new hand appeared on Saint John's injured arm. To thank the Mother of God, he added a third silver hand to the Theotokos icon as an ex-voto.
