The painting, belonging to the Eleusa iconographic type (Our Lady of Tenderness), shows the Holy Virgin holding the Infant Jesus with both hands, close to her, cheeks touching, while Jesus holds on his Mother's cloak with one hand while stroking her face with his right hand in a great moment of tenderness, emphasizing the human nature of the Infant Jesus and his vulnerability.
