Hand-painted wooden Russian doll, Yaroslavl Mother of God, 10 in. Russian doll made of wood and painted by hand, characterised by 4 full painted matryoshka dolls and 3 cut-out dolls creating alcoves for the smaller painted dolls and framing their icons.
The biggest alcove represents the entry of an Orthodox church with a small cross on the bottom and an inlaid arch. On the top of the alcove, two angels and Jesus' face are depicted with golden details.
The first full painted doll represents represents the Mother of God of Yaroslavl, an exemple of the Eleousa iconographic type, where the Theotokos and the Infant Jesus are closed to each other, cheek to cheek, and the Infant touches his mother face with affection.
The second alcove is depicted with the same inlaid image of the Orthodox church, but without the paintings on top, showing the Christ Pantocrator with closed book painted on the smaller doll.
The third painted doll represents Saint Nicolas, while the fourth is depicted with the image of Saint Michael.
All dolls are painted by hand by experienced Russian painters, specialised in freehand painting of the School of Miniature, the ancient Russian art developed as an evolution of the Byzantine iconographic painting during the time of Imperial Russia.
The halos are made with gold leaf and hand-painted details on it, making each piece unique and precious.
