Painted Russian egg, Virgin of Vladimir, 12 in. Russian wooden egg painted by hand with the icon of the Mother of God of Vladimir, one of the most famous Byzantine icon.
The peculiarity of this wooden egg is its Russian doll-type design: a bigger egg shell, cut in half, contains the smaller whole painted egg and frames its icon thanks to three cut-out portions. These openings are carved in the inlaid golden representation of an Orthodox church entry, like three arches with a small cross on the bottom. On top of the alcove, two angels and Jesus' face are painted with golden halos.
The icon depicted on the whole egg represents Vladimir Mother of God, belonging to the Eleousa iconographic type, where the Theotokos hugs the Infant Jesus with love and affection.
The two eggs are painted by hand by experienced Russian painters, specialised in freehand painting of the School of Miniature, the ancient Russian art developed as an evolution of the Byzantine iconographic painting during the time of Imperial Russia.
The halos are made with gold leaf and hand-painted details on it, making each piece unique and precious.
