Nativity Medal in stone, Bethlehem

When I was young, 70 + years ago, I found a wee prayer card with St Martin of Porres' picture on it and read up about him. I've always been an animal lover; at the time, and to my mother's concern, I fed all the neighborhood stray cats while their number increased exponentially! When I saw the M. of Porres statue, it brought back long-forgotten childhood memories of someone who, as a child, I wished to imitate. The statue is beautiful, much as it is in its picture. The inclusion of the Crucifix, broom, dog and mouse really represent the man in the Dominican habit, enough for people to question me about my 'new friend'. Discipleship can take many forms, from that of a superb speaker to the small statue of a humble saint 'living' among my plants!
