St. Peter is depicted holding two keys, one golden and one silver, symbolising the power bestowed upon him by Christ to bind and loose in heaven and on earth. The golden key alludes to power in the kingdom of heaven, while the silver one indicates the papacy's spiritual authority on earth. With his right hand, he makes a blessing gesture, a sign of his spiritual authority as the first Pope of the Church.
