Ancient Russian icon of Pokrov, Protection of the Mother of God, 19th century, 18x15 in. The icon of the Protection of the Mother of God is connected to the story of Romanos the Melodist.

In the icon, Saint Romanos is depicted in his diaconal robe, standing at the ambo, during a liturgical celebration attended by the Imperial court.
