Mother of God of Three Hands, Russian painted icon of the 19th c., 14x12 in
Mother of God of Three Hands, Russian painted icon of the 19th c., 13.8x12 inches. Icon of the 19th century from Moscow, painted with egg tempera on wood.
The miraculous icon takes its name from legend about Saint John Damascene whose hand was cut off on Lion III's orders, punishing him for defending the religious images. The Saint prayed the icon so hard that a new hand appeared on his injured arm and, to thank the Mother of God, he added a third silver hand to the Theotokos icon as an ex-voto.
