Antique Russian icon, 19th century, Descent into Hell, 21x17 in.
Antique Russian icon depicting the Descent into Hell of Jesus Christ.
Created in the 19th century, this icon follows the tradition of the Old Believers of Vetka, a prominent centre for icon production. The scene portrays a key episode in Orthodox Christian theology: the descent of Christ into Hell, where he frees the souls of the righteous and defeats death.
Christ, surrounded by a radiant garment, is shown at the centre, lifting Adam from darkness with strength. Eve, often positioned on the opposite side, has her hands covered in a sign of adoration. Christ's gesture expresses the redemptive action bringing salvation to all humanity.
The icon is enriched with symbolic elements completing the Paschal cycle: the breaking of the gates of Hell, the Good Thief at the threshold of Paradise, and Christ's appearance to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. The composition, with its depth and dynamic figures, emphasises the significance of Christ's victory over death.
Origin: Vetka, Russia – Old Believers school.
Technique: egg tempera on wood with levkas preparation.
Dimensions: 20.9x17.3 in.
Period: 19th century.
This icon, with its profound expressiveness and rich iconography, is a significant example of Orthodox spirituality. It comes with a certificate of authenticity attesting to its historical value and authenticity, along with a detailed description of its theological significance.
